Executive Summary

PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is a pragmatic set of best practices and security measures that any organization must follow if they accept and handle cardholder data online. The standard encompasses network security, data protection, data encryption, system security, access control, ongoing monitoring and testing and security policy development. PCI DSS was created in response to the increasing problem of security breaches in which thousands of customers have had credit card information stolen or compromised. It is the result of collaboration between major card companies under the auspices of the PCI Security Standards Council, founded by American Express, Discover Financial Services, JCB International, MasterCard Worldwide, and Visa, Inc.
