This paper presents the design and evaluation of a mobile p2p payment application called mFerio. mFerio was designed to replace cash-based transactions and uses Near-Field Communication (NFC) technology as its communication medium. The paper first identifies design criteria that payment systems should satisfy and compare the current cash-based system against those criteria. Next, the paper explains how mFerio improves on the limitations of cash-based systems. The paper then describes mFerio's user interface design and implementation, focusing on how it balances usability with security needs. Finally, it presents the results of a usability evaluation with 75 people, showing that mFerio, relative to cash-based systems, is fast, accurate, and easy to use.
