The Persistent Relay Carrier Sensing Multiple Access (PRCSMA) has been recently presented in the literature as a novel Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol based on the IEEE 802.11 and modified to cope with the contention among the relays in a Cooperative ARQ (C-ARQ) scheme. The authors present in this paper a theoretical model to calculate the average cooperation delay of PRCSMA. Computer simulations have been carried out to assess the accuracy of the model. Cooperative Automatic Retransmission reQuest (C-ARQ) schemes have been proposed as an efficient way to exploit the broadcast nature of the wireless channel in order to improve the performance of wireless networks. In a C-ARQ scheme, communication takes place in at least four slots when a packet is received with errors at the destination.
