Performance Estimation of Novel 32-Bit and 64-Bit RISC Based Network Processor Cores
The rapid expansion of computer networks in number of users, servers, connections and demands for new applications, services and protocols, along with the tremendous growth in data traffic has claimed the development and deployment of high-speed telecommunication systems. At the same time the fiber optics has shown significant bandwidth increase, providing multi-Gb/s line rates. However, present network devices still have limited processing power, which makes them unable to satisfy these demands. Therefore, telecommunication industry is looking forward for more innovative ways of designing flexible, scalable and high performance routers architecture. A solution to this problem is to use specialized processors, called Network Processors (NPs).
