Executive Summary

In the last few years, one of the most attractive topics in the wireless communications research field, testified by the increasing number of dedicated conferences and journal contributions, is Cognitive Radio (CR) technology. Although the CR technology includes all the techniques which have to transform "Radio nodes from blind executors of predefined protocols to radio-domain-aware intelligent agents", its capability for guaranteeing a more flexible and efficient utilization of the radio spectrum is usually stressed. From this point of view, one of the most challenging issues faced by CR systems is the so called spectrum sensing, that is the capability of being aware of the surrounding radio scenario.
