Multicast/broadcast networks are designed for supporting potentially large user groups where many users are subscribing simultaneously to the same content, as, for example, in the case of mobile TV. Traditional cellular networks were initially designed for unicast services, and, may waste radio network resources by transmitting the same content in multiple copies to different users simultaneously. With multicasting or broadcasting, however, more efficient resource utilization is possible. Therefore, for UTRAN/GERAN, 3GPP has introduced Multimedia Broadcast/Multicast Services (MBMS) in Release 6, where broadcast content is transmitted via common physical channels accessible to all users in a cell.
