This paper describes the basic physics principles of 802.11 networks. It will cover the theoretical aspects such as Maxwell equations of electromagnetic fields as well as the practical implementation of these concepts when building 802.11 networks. In everyday usage of 802.11 wireless networks the approach is mostly empirical and the physical concepts are most of the time hidden. The purpose of this paper is to shed some light into these concepts as to help the wireless LAN engineer better understand the behavior of the network.
