Executive Summary

The authors present PIP (Packets In Pipe), a novel solution to bulk data transfer intended for wireless sensor networks. PIP is a TDMA protocol with primary emphasis on efficiency and reliability. It strives to achieve high throughput by operating at highest degree of parallelism (in transmissions) along the path. Use of multiple channels, simplistic scheduling along route, driver-level pipelining are key enabling features of PIP, last one being specific to Tmote Sky [6] platform. PIP uses end-to-end selective NACKs and hop-by-hop positive ACKs to conceive reliability. The connection-oriented protocol attempts to keep utilization of bottleneck resources (radio) to maximum possible.
