A few years ago, a Wal-Mart employee suggested that the company remove the light bulbs from the vending machines in its well-lit stores. The company acted on the suggestion - and saved $1.2 million a year in electricity costs as a result. Elsewhere at the retailing giant, a cashier suggested that the big machines that the stores used to crush cardboard boxes could also be used to capture and recycle loose plastic.
