The evolution of the modern Point-Of-Sale (POS) has, for the most part, been a smooth progression of systemic improvements, accelerated by a few periods of rapid technological advancement. The switch from the mechanical cash register to computer POS terminals was certainly one such period of rapid change. The switch from mainframed terminals to networked PCs was another. Whereas POS 1.0 was more hardware-driven - relying heavily on device resident hardware and software bundles - POS 2.0 is hardware-agnostic and driven by cloud-based applications and services that offer unprecedented new levels of flexibility and functionality.
