Executive Summary

This white paper will examine some of the key real-time data management and analysis problems with smart energy grids. It will also discuss how CEP-driven Continuous Intelligence streamlines the path to better energy management. On August 14, 2003, a series of problems lurched their way through transmission and generation facilities in the Northeastern United States and Canada, creating one of North America's worst power grid failures and blacking out much of New York State and parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada. Seven years later, the threat of a repeat incident still exists. Now, as the United States and other countries revitalize their infrastructures to meet increasingly stringent energy policies, energy management and smart energy grids have become the industry's latest "Hot Topic."
