This paper describes the immediate needs confronted by Federal government agencies associated with protecting databases from security threats and attaining compliance with mission, security, privacy and financial regulations and policies. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had to warn over 45,000 employees that their personal data may have been compromised in a hack of one of its computer systems. The agency reported that one of its computers was illegally accessed and employee personal identity information was stolen electronically. Heartland Payment Systems (HPY) in January 2009 disclosed that intruders hacked into the computers it uses to process 100 million payment card transactions per month for 175,000 merchants.
