Server virtualization based on virtual machine (VM) software is becoming a popular solution for consolidation of data center servers. With VM software, a single physical machine can support a number of guest operating systems (OSes), each of which runs on its own complete virtual instance of the underlying physical machine, as shown in Figure 1. The guest OSes can be instances of a single version of one OS, different releases of the same OS, or completely different OSes (for example, Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, or Solaris).
