Recent Advances in Burst Mode Communications for Extended Fiber-to-the-Home Networks
In this paper, the authors present recent advances in burst mode operation for WDM/TDM networks, focusing on mitigation techniques implemented at the ONU, as well as ONUONU cross-streaming. Direct communication between ONUs are experimentally demonstrated with a tunable MG-Y laser in a ring+tree PON for 640 users, without passing electrically powered equipment. In the last years, access networks have become an interesting research topic in optical communications, for enhancing the number of users, reach, bandwidth and services. Most of the effort is focused on Passive Optical Networks (PON), since its passive nature is an important advantage for operators, keeping the fiber plant simple.
