Using multiple-input-multiple-output processing for terrestrial multi-path channels is well known. The authors describe here its use in reducing a terminal's aperture for line-of-sight satellite communications. Differential delay and Doppler between a satellite-pair are equalized at the hub transmitter (for a point-to-point system employing a 2?1 space-time encoder) or the remote receiver (for a dual-satellite polarization diversity system for point-to-multipoint applications) via interference cancellation. System performance is provided for both cases. A conventional duplex communication system using single satellite transponder with independent forward and return links. Typically, the hub transmits information to the remotes using a wideband carrier via Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA).
