With today's emphasis on improving Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return On Investment (ROI), organizations must find new ways to decrease costs while maintaining functionality, meeting service level agreements, and mitigating risk. If business relies on mainframe systems, one may feel locked into a proprietary infrastructure with annual software, hardware, and support cost that are becoming increasingly less competitive. Yet the applications running on the mainframe are likely crucial to business. Many organizations are now taking the approach of moving valuable legacy applications to open systems server environments with greater economies of scale and increased business flexibility so that they can reduce overall expenditures and open up new opportunities for increased IT value.
