Executive Summary

Handheld assessments tools have been in use for approximately 5 years. Their use has been heavily stimulated by the federal requirement that all Reading First teachers administer diagnostic assessments several times a year to their K-3 students. Studies examining the affordances of PDA assessment devices have looked primarily at reading tools. Studies on the mCLASS system have found that the handheld assessments save teachers considerable time over paper-based assessments, and enable teachers to identify and reflect on students' strengths, understand their skill mastery and progress towards specific benchmarks, to plan differentiated instruction, and to evaluate their own performance as teachers (Mandinach, Honey, Light, Heinze, & Nudell, 2005; Sharp, 2004).
