Road Note 59 - January 2001

A concrete pavement has four key characteristics: appearance, flexural strength, skid resistance (and/or slip resistance) and durability. Unlike other applications of concrete, pavements are subject to the abrasion of traffic, so it is important that their surface is very tough and durable. Engineers tend to focus more on the properties of concrete in its hardened state, rather than placement, compaction, finishing and curing, which are of utmost importance to achieving the desired properties in hardened concrete.
