Colleges and universities are in the business of stimulating learning, education and research. Historically, that mandate has been fulfilled by providing open campuses that allow students, faculty and staff to use libraries, laboratories and meeting rooms for collaboration at all hours. But maintaining an open environment that fosters a continuous and healthy exchange of information is a challenge in today's security-conscious world. One significant security breach - be it a criminal act, weather or other event - can endanger lives, damage property and jeopardize the reputation of the school, thereby having a negative impact on student enrollment and revenue for years to come.
