The new age of nuclear energy is fraught with challenges of cost and complexity. These require fresh approaches to the successful build of new nuclear power plants. In particular, efficient program management underpinned and supported by information technology will be crucial for high performance, helping to create greater certainty, mitigate risks and introduce greater standardization to the nuclear power industry. Advanced IT systems have the potential not only to address these complexities and time constraints, but also to transform the economics of the nuclear industry. Standardization, a term common in the IT industry, will have to become part of the nuclear sector's language if utilities are to deliver new investments as scheduled and on budget.
