Executive Summary

With companies like Google, Microsoft and Amazon building massive data centers, Cloud Computing will soon be part of everyone's daily life. But the scale of these data centers requires new approaches. One approach is the use of computing PODs. A computing POD consists of all of the elements of a traditional data center within a self-contained box that is similar in appearance to a standard shipping container. The PODs can be manufactured and pre-wired off-site, and then delivered to the data center and connected to power cooling and networking. Companies like Sun and HP are currently developing PODs. In order to optimize the data center space, the POD contains storage, networking and up to several thousand servers.
