The process of comparing two signals to determine whether they are similar or different is a key operation in numerous electrical engineering systems. For instance, in image processing, one may be interested in determining whether a compressed image has been reconstructed to within a specified mean squared error tolerance. In security applications, comparing a received image with an original image allows forensic experts to determine the location and extent of tampering. In general, given the two signals, and the error tolerance, a computer can perform a suitable measurement and determine whether the difference between them is acceptable.
