Executive Summary

Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) perform an important role for security solutions on Mobile Ad Hoc NETworks (MANETs). Changes in network paradigms and the increasing dependence of people on technology compel the development of more dependable and robust PKIs. However, designing PKIs for MANETs is a demanding task. These networks are fully distributed and have particular communication characteristics which might leave PKIs defenseless against attacks, intrusions or faults. Hence, this paper presents a secure and reliable PKI for MANETs, called Secure Group-based Public Key Management (SG-PKM). SG-PKM provides a robust and secure key management service even in face of attacks or intrusions.
