Free registration required

Executive Summary

Information Technology advancements in healthcare are expected to accelerate, due to cost concerns, more viable and cost-effective Electronic Medical Record (EMR) technology, and federal spending initiatives. With an increase in healthcare IT comes a corresponding concern over healthcare information security. EMR (also referred to as electronic healthcare records or EHR) presents unique challenges in information security. Every medical record must be secured against unauthorized access, yet the information must also be made easily available to healthcare staff and patients. During the course of a day, a doctor may need to access dozens of client records, using applications that span exam-room terminals, laptops, and the Internet. Certain records must also be made accessible to pharmacies, insurance and billing organization, and to patients themselves.
