Architectures for on-board instrument processing platforms are as varied as the instruments themselves. This paper outlines several critical attributes which determine the technologies used for space-borne instruments. A digital radio instrument is described and the rationale for determining the architecture is presented. This paper presents some of the issues faced by engineers when designing on-board processing systems for space. The focus is on discussing available technologies so that the appropriate design trade-offs can be made.
