Sending Out an SMS: Texting in an Emergency

SMS messaging has a crucial role to play in the management of disasters, emergencies and major logistical events which affect large volumes of people. Yet its potential application in such scenarios remains largely unrealized. It can be easy to get side-tracked by rich media mobile applications and newer location-centric technologies, but the national and global reach of SMS means it remains indubitably superior to any mobile medium outside of voice calling. In addition to being able to take advantage of a wide spread of educated users, the lower technical demands associated with sending a single isolated packet of data can give messaging the edge over voice communication channels.
