Executive Summary

Service provisioning in customer satisfying quality is an important issue for current and future network operators. Real-time services suffer from network performance influences, e.g. delay, jitter and packet-loss. This paper evaluates the handover performance in WLAN access networks with regard to different WLAN security mechanisms, such as WPA2 PSK and WPA2 EAPTLS. Performance investigations show that WPA2 EAP-TLS influences the handover performance and thus the network performance in a significant manner. A major impact is the authentication process introduced by the IEEE 802.1X EAP-TLS. The proposed sequential authentication concept based on WPA2 PSK and WPA2 EAP-TLS decreases the influence of authentication time in a handover process.
