Executive Summary

Three probe-based schemes accounting for multi-layer performance information are proposed to evaluate and guarantee lightpath QoT in transparent optical networks. Low blocking and fast set up times are achieved for different service classes. In future transparent optical networks, Quality of Transmission (QoT) will have to be ensured before client data is transmitted over a lightpath. This will be achieved by using Impairment-Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (IRWA) in the lightpath setup process. Studies on IRWA began in the late 1990s. IRWA incorporates the impact of an imperfect optical layer in the process of setting up lightpaths.
