The purpose of this paper is to develop the understanding on how sustainability strategies emerge. Two case studies focusing on business groups from the cork and electrical equipment sectors are compared and contrasted in terms of their sustainability strategies. They argue that the formation of a holistic sustainability strategy is dependent on the integration of a comprehensive range of environmentally-friendly practices which implies taking interdependent strategic decisions along the dimensions of actors, resources and activities.
