This paper is the first in a series of white papers on Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) performance in the Linux environment. IBM has defined five SOA Foundation Entry Points to help a business get started with SOA. This paper focuses on the first entry point, which is the enablement of Web services and reuse; subsequent papers will evaluate the remaining entry points. More specifically, in this paper, one examines the impact of several parameters and features in WebSphere Application Server, such as administrative security, heap size, garbage collection policy, thread pools, persistent HTTP connections, and performance monitors, as well as in Linux, such as the large page support, on the performance of Web services and how these parameters can be tuned for better performance.
