SOA/REAM as Vector Modulator for QAM Upstream
Simultaneous encoding of information in the optical phase and amplitude for upstream transmission is demonstrated with an integrated SOA/REAM of small form factor. The crosstalk penalties between the QAM tributaries are assessed and discussed. Impressive strides have been made in the field of optical access, mostly fuelled by the rapid evolution of multimedia services for which cost-effective delivery is sought after. Earlier standards for access networks such as Ethernet or Gigabit Passive Optical Network have been already revised to follow the trends of next generation access. Especially, higher loss budgets and data rates are targeted, favoring reflective amplified modulators for the customer premises due to their colorless operation, inferring a cost-efficient mass deployment of user terminals.
