The current drive towards new networking paradigms that make information the center of the network architecture, cannot ignore the fact that any new architecture will have to co-exist with the existing Internet for an extended period of time. In order for a new architecture to be globally deployed, it must ensure that existing applications will continue to operate, preferably without the need to even recompile them. As part of the Publish Subscribe Internet Routing Paradigm (PSIRP) project, the authors have explored the options for making existing applications based on the ubiquitous Sockets Application Programming Interface (API) compatible with the PSIRP prototype implementation, which is based on publish/subscribe principles throughout the protocol stack.
