Executive Summary

Certification is the hot issue in many industries that rely on the use of computers and software in embedded systems that control safety-critical equipment. The term "Certification" in software engineering is typically associated with three meanings: certifying product, process, or personnel. Product and process certification are the most challenging in developing software for real-time safety critical systems, such as flight control and traffic control, road vehicles, railway interchanges, nuclear facilities, medical equipment and implanted devices, etc. These are systems that operate under strict timing requirements and may cause significant damage or loss of life, if not operating properly. Therefore, the society has to protect itself, and governments and engineering societies initiated establishing standards and guidelines for computer system developers.
