To determine the potential of Solid-State Drives (SSDs) to replace Hard Disk Drives (HDDs) in the enterprise, Intel IT conducted a Proof of Concept (PoC) that included performance tests, measurement of power consumption, and Total-Cost-of-Ownership (TCO) analysis. It found that using SSDs to replace data HDDs in disk arrays could increase I/O performance up to 8x for comparable TCO, and that using them as internal server OS disks reduced the time required for common support tasks such as installs and reboots by up to 73 percent. It plans to perform further testing with selected I/O-intensive enterprise applications to determine benefits and deployment strategies.
