Spatial Modulation and Space Shift Keying in Single Carrier Communication

The use of multiple antennas at the transmitter and receiver sides can significantly enhance the capacity and reliability of wireless links. However, multi-antenna operation faces significant challenges due to complexity and cost of the hardware owing to the requirement of inter-antenna synchronization and maintenance of multiple Radio-Frequency (RF) chains. Spatial Modulation (SM) is a relatively new modulation technique for multiple antenna systems which addresses these issues. This modulation technique was first proposed, and later improved further. Space Shift Keying (SSK) is another signaling technique which can be thought of as the special case of SM.
