Specialty Drug Whitepaper

Specialty drugs are generally considered high-cost injectable, infused, oral or inhaled drugs that require close supervision and monitoring. To facilitate comparison of the University's experience with specialty drugs with that of the major national pharmacy benefit management companies, this report focuses on specialty drug products from eight therapeutic areas including, anticoagulants, antivirals, cancer, growth hormone deficiencies, hematopoietics, infertility, multiple sclerosis (MS), and rheumatoid arthritis. Specialty drugs are the fastest-growing segment of pharmaceutical spending within the University of Michigan pharmacy benefit creating financial pressure to develop better methods to track and manage the use of these products.
