The art of decision making is one of the key attributes of a good manager. There are management decisions made that will impact the day to day operations, mid-term planning or might even be considered of such a significant nature that the decision could be considered strategic. It is this notion of strategic decisions that I will address in this white paper. To set the context for the discussion, the authors will not discuss the cognitive process of decision making itself but instead focus on the scope and context of a critical and key set of decisions made by IT leadership in support of the direction of IT.
