Companies with best supply chains have superior planning organizations that enable the enterprise to shape demand rather than respond to it, dynamically react to demand and supply situations and collaborate effectively with business partners. The author surveyed supply chain executives at more than 200 companies on the key capabilities they needed to master their supply chain, including those related to the planning organization. It's identified that a small minority of respondents that excelled at planning, a group the author refer to as "Masters." In contrast, it's identified respondents on the other end of the spectrum - "Laggards" - whose performance in key planning areas was worse than the sample as a whole. In comparing the performance of masters and laggards, major differences were found.
