Although simple wireless devices built from low-end components are quite popular these days, one seldom hears about serious wireless networks within this framework. While it is not a big challenge to implement simple broadcasters of short packets, it is quite another issue to turn them into collaborating nodes of a serious ad hoc wireless system. Apparently, many popular ad hoc routing schemes proposed and analyzed in the literature address devices with a somewhat larger resource base. To make matters worse, some people believe that such devices must be programmed in Java to make serious applications possible.
