Executive Summary

Each year several hundred thousand RISC/UNIX platforms are migrated to Linux, Windows, another UNIX system or a different platform. More than 80 percent of the migrated systems are moved to Linux or Windows with most of the remainder moving to another RISC/UNIX platform. For the past 15 years and longer, RISC/UNIX platforms, such as AIX on POWER, HP-UX on PA-RISC and Solaris on SPARC, have established a history of solid reliability in the data center. RISC/UNIX typically runs mission-critical applications, including backend databases, and has a reputation for good performance, high reliability.
