Executive Summary

'Sustainable development' - or simply, 'sustainability' - is most commonly defined as "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Since this first intergovernmental articulation of sustainability, in 1987, there has been a growing awareness of the economic, environmental and social issues associated with human activities, along with the creation of strategies to address those issues. Today, consumers and the public expect companies, their government and institutions to operate within specific boundaries with respect to human health, the environment and social responsibility.
