Inscriptions are the main source for reconstructing the history and culture of ancient civilizations. The scripts of modern Indian languages have evolved over centuries and finally transformed to the present form. Modern readers find difficulty in interpreting a script of olden days. The characters have changed over time. Hence, for reading ancient scripts the period has to be determined, so as to have knowledge of which character set of ancient days is to be employed for automatic reading. Prediction of the era of a given ancient script is a follow-on member of an ancient script recognition system and can be used as a component of the OCR system for ancient scripts.
