The wireless spectrum has always been the scarce resource that creates bottlenecks in communication channels. On the other hand, the channel access scheduling has gone from coordinating homogeneous users to heterogeneous ones, as seen in the recent development of cognitive radio technologies. In this paper, the authors address the spectrum scarcity problem using a novel approach, in which they proactively schedule heterogeneous wireless systems to access the same channel over the temporal domain. The key contribution of this work is to utilize the inherent protocol mechanisms of these wireless systems non-intrusively in order for them to work harmoniously in the same spectrum band.
