The Challenges of Today's Prescribing Process
The writing of a prescription is one of the most common?and important?therapeutic interactions between physician and patient. According to the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), almost 3 billion prescriptions were filled in 2000. This represents nearly a 50% increase since 1992. The number of filled prescriptions is expected to reach 4 billion by the year 2005. NACDS also reports that four out of every five patients who visit a doctor leave with a prescription, sometimes for more than one drug in 2000, 10.4 prescriptions were written for the average American.
