Modern enterprises are becoming more widely distributed, and workers are increasingly mobile. Fewer employees are working in large corporate offices, with estimates of the remote workforce as high as 80% of employees in some companies. As enterprises hire employees and contractors from a global talent pool, wherever they may live, they are forming virtual teams: the remote worker has become the rule rather than the exception. Even within office environments, a recent survey of CIOs2 estimates that more than 40% of employees' phone calls are already made on cellular phones, and research firm Gartner predicts3 that by 2013, 40% of knowledge workers worldwide will have abandoned their desk phone.
