Executive Summary

In the framework of antenna arrays, the authors show that the estimation of the synchronization parameters of the impinging signal (namely, time - delay and Doppler shift) is decoupled to the Direction Of Arrival estimation. They propose signal models for unstructured and structured arrays where the noise is considered Gaussian and colored, an approach that has shown robustness against close multipath. The mitigation of interferences and the multipath effect in parameter estimation constitutes a challenging problem in positioning, active radar and sonar and wireless communications systems. Recent works with antenna - array based receivers point to the idea that the assumption of colored noise (and thus with unknown covariance) gives to the derived estimators an improved robustness against these undesired effects.
