Executive Summary

The impact of information systems on productivity is wide ranging and potentially affects all other activities of a company. This trend extends beyond high-tech companies in Taiwan. The aquacultural industry is finding they can substantially increase productivity and reduce costs by moving process tracking, management and reverse tracking functions online. This paper presents a new Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and Quick Response code-based (QR codes) system for managing in-house seafood cultivation, inspection, distribution and retailing and its impact on productivity and costs. The value chain system was tested in a white shrimp cultivation factory which provides live-shrimp offerings, and demonstrated efficiency, effectiveness, and better customer services from the model.
