In general, communication protocols, starting from the network layer, should be independent of the underlying transmission media. The same principle applies to the existing Internet architecture based on the TCP/IP protocol suite that was designed to run over wired media four decades ago. However, the advent of the wireless network technologies has posited the need for revision of the TCP/IP protocols, namely through modifications and/or enhancements in order to meet the performance challenges and demands, congestion management being one, warranted by the physical characteristics of the transmission milieu.
