This paper compares the effects of an amplify and forward relay and a decode and forward relay on a point to point transmission system. Specifically, the outage probability and the consequent diversity order are derived in both cases, under the assumption of Rayleigh fading. The relay is assumed be half duplex and the communication is divided into two phases: the source transmits K symbols in the first one and the relay re-transmits N symbols in phase 2, with the source remaining silent. The relay symbols are obtained by linear transformation by means of a N ?K randomly generated matrix.
