How does open source software create value for all the links in its ecosystem - namely investors, vendors and customers? Specifically, how does open source content management software create value? The past few years have seen frenzied investment in open source software. While some investments, like MySQL and RedHat, have been spectacularly successful, others are still in their early stages. IT organizations at some large corporations have whole-heartedly embraced open source software platforms, but some others are still reluctant to use open source software for any mission-critical applications. This paper presents findings on the potential value creation opportunity, the current impediments to value creation and the future of the open source Enterprise Content Management (ECM) market.
